Flights of Spring Formula18 Catamaran Open
April 18, 19
2009
The
Jericho Sailing Center in Vancouver BC will be hosting an open class regatta for
mono hulls and cats. Jericho puts on a great event with an excellent
racing program on the water. Add in a great banquet facility on site and
you have a great weekend coming up.
In 2007, five various types of Formula 18
catamarans planned to race together at the Flights of Spring regatta.
Is was a smaller turn out but provided a common platform for Hobie F18
Tigers and Nacra F18s to race together and share sailing knowledge. One-year
later, key people built up the event and spread the word further and doubled
the attendance. Despite the freak snow storm on Friday night, the
weather turned sunny and nine Formula 18s racing catamarans hit the line in
great sailing conditions.
The Flights of Spring is a great warm up
regatta that encourages everyone to get the boat rigged and on the water.
There is nothing like the urgency of a looming big event that gets the
blocks out and lines rigged. For most people it is the first time
dipping the hull in the water. Even seasoned skippers take a pregnant pause
trying to figure out how the boat goes together. Eventually everyone
gets assistance and on the water to share the wind.
If anyone is unfamiliar with racing or needs
help getting more performance out of their catamaran, this is the event that
brings friendly advice on and off the water. If you need some competition,
you will find it at this event. Top skippers from USA and Canada will sail
friendly but drive the boat hard when the time requires.
Arrive on Friday and rig your boat in the
large compound. There is time to arrive on Saturday morning if you
are fast to rig up. Normally the PRO could start the first
race by 11am. Click here for
